NCP MPs Akhtar Hossain and Abdul Hannan Masud have raised allegations of discrimination in the allocation of disaster relief funds, claiming that constituencies represented by opposition MPs are being unfairly overlooked. During the question-answer session in the parliament on Monday, they demanded an explanation for this alleged bias. Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal responded that allocations are made based on the demands of MPs and local needs, and assured that opposition MPs would also receive their due allocations soon.
Akhtar Hossain questioned whether there had been any changes in the disaster map of the country, noting that the allocations made on April 30 were only distributed to constituencies represented by ruling party MPs. He argued that such discrimination affects the general public in opposition-held areas and called for measures to address this inequality. The minister clarified that allocations are made at the district level by district administrators when disasters occur and are also based on the demands submitted by MPs.
In response to a similar question from Abdul Hannan Masud, the relief minister stated that the current government has allocated Tk 25 lakh for Kazir Bazar and Tk 30 lakh for TR, along with 20 metric tons each of rice and wheat, per constituency for the fiscal year 2025-26. Additional allocations are made based on the demands of MPs and local needs. The minister also mentioned that the ministry has constructed 588 flood shelters, 327 cyclone shelters, and 115 disaster shelters across the country, with plans to build more.
