Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has highlighted the critical need for increased investment in agricultural research to ensure food security in Bangladesh. Speaking at an orientation program for freshers at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), he stressed that ensuring food security remains a significant challenge for the country.
Agricultural Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Minister Alamgir encouraged the students to move beyond traditional pursuits of government jobs and instead focus on creating employment opportunities through entrepreneurship in agro-based industries, agribusiness, and innovative agricultural initiatives. He noted the enormous potential within the agriculture sector and urged young people to contribute to the national economy by becoming entrepreneurs.
Addressing Economic and Employment Challenges
The minister acknowledged the severe economic challenges facing the country, partly attributed to weakened economic foundations during the previous government. He mentioned the high unemployment rate, with around 40 million educated youths and a significant number of job applications for a single position. Alamgir emphasized the need for proper planning and skill development to restructure the system and create a workforce capable of contributing to the economy.
Alamgir also discussed the government's efforts to establish agricultural hubs in the northern and southern regions to address these challenges. He highlighted the global energy crisis and the government's focus on promoting green energy, which he believes will ultimately benefit farmers.
Prime Minister's Education Adviser Dr. Mahdi Amin praised SAU's contributions to agricultural production and research, hoping that the new students would play a vital role in building food security and a self-reliant Bangladesh. SAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Abdul Latif presided over the function, with Anisur Rahman, MP, and reserved seat MP Sanjida Islam Tulsi also in attendance.
