Students in Bangladesh are calling for more than just increased budget allocation for education; they demand effective measures to enhance the quality of education. With a significant portion of the population being young, transforming this demographic into skilled human resources is crucial for sustainable economic growth. The budget must prioritize education, health, skill development, and employment.
Inflation control should be the foremost priority in the budget, as the high cost of essential goods is a major burden on ordinary people, including students. The cost of living for students, especially those coming from districts and sub-districts to Dhaka, has significantly increased in recent years. Rent, food, transportation, and educational materials have all become more expensive, making it difficult for many families to afford higher education for their children.
While increasing the education budget is positive, it is equally important to ensure that the funds are effectively utilized to improve the quality of education. Artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, programming, and digital skills are now essential in the global labor market, but many students in Bangladesh still lack adequate opportunities in these areas. The budget should include special programs for technology-based education and skill development. Additionally, foreign language education and increased funding for research are necessary. Many university students are interested in research but are hindered by a lack of necessary information, databases, and research facilities.
Special health facilities, health cards, or priority-based services in government hospitals for students could also be considered.
