China's President Xi Jinping has expressed readiness to work with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to ensure long-term, sound, and stable development of bilateral relations, according to Pyongyang's state media. This follows Xi's rare visit to North Korea last month, where both leaders pledged to deepen ties amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and Pyongyang's expanding military cooperation with Russia.
Message of Cooperation
In a message dated July 1, Xi thanked Kim for his congratulatory message marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of China's Communist Party, as reported by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Xi noted that Kim's message reflected the 'deep and warm feelings' of the North Korean leader, the ruling Workers' Party, and the North Korean people toward China.
Shared History and Goals
Xi emphasized the shared Marxist ideology of the Communist Party of China and the Workers' Party of Korea, stating that both countries have stood together for national independence and jointly advanced the socialist cause over generations. He expressed his commitment to guide the relevant sectors and regions of both sides to fully implement the important common understanding achieved during their meetings.
Recent Visit and Future Plans
Referring to his recent state visit to Pyongyang, Xi thanked Kim for the 'enthusiastic and friendly' hospitality during the trip. In response, Kim described their summit as a 'historic occasion' and reaffirmed North Korea's 'steadfast stand' to continue strengthening ties with Beijing.
Geopolitical Context
North Korea has recently expanded its security ties with Russia, sending soldiers and munitions to assist Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, China remains North Korea's largest economic partner, accounting for nearly 98 percent of the country's foreign trade in 2024, according to South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Significance for Bangladesh
The strengthening of China-North Korea ties has geopolitical implications for the region, including Bangladesh. As China's influence grows in the region, Bangladesh must navigate its relationships carefully to ensure its national interests are protected. The development also highlights the importance of maintaining balanced diplomatic relations in a complex geopolitical landscape.
