The British government has announced the full nationalisation of British Steel to secure the future of steel production in the UK. This move comes after the government took control of the company from Chinese firm Jingye last year to prevent its imminent closure. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the decision protects skilled jobs and safeguards a vital national capability.

Government Intervention and Nationalisation

Jingye, which purchased British Steel in 2020, lost control of the company in April last year when the government intervened. Business Minister Peter Kyle explained that the government stepped in to keep the blast furnaces running and prevent a disorderly closure that would have put steel production, supply chains, and thousands of jobs at risk. Since then, ministers and officials have worked to find a long-term solution for the business.

Significance for the UK Steel Industry

The nationalisation of British Steel marks the company's return to government ownership for the first time since 1988. The UK government viewed the possible closure of the northern England plant as a threat to Britain's long-term economic security, given the decline of the country's once-robust steel industry. The government's takeover followed Jingye's declaration that the plant was no longer financially viable.
