In a dramatic overnight event, more than 390 drones targeted the Moscow region, according to the city's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. Most of these drones were neutralized by air defence forces before reaching the city, with 81 destroyed as they approached. The Russian defence ministry, however, reported a total of 356 drones were downed across more than a dozen regions, including near the capital. The discrepancy in numbers remains unexplained. Meanwhile, Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that drone attacks damaged housing in the town of Chekhov and the Vaulovo village. There were no immediate reports of further damage. This attack comes as Ukraine intensifies its long-range counter-attacks on Russian targets, retaliating for Moscow's nightly barrages on Ukrainian cities.

The overnight drone assault on the Moscow region is part of a broader campaign by Ukraine to strike back at Russian energy, logistics, and military sites. Kyiv views these attacks as fair retaliation for the nightly bombardments Moscow carries out on Ukrainian cities. The incident occurred just hours before Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to meet with US President Donald Trump, adding geopolitical significance to the event.

Mayor Sobyanin's announcement on Telegram highlighted the scale of the attack, stating that the drones were flying towards the Moscow region between 8:30 pm and 6:30 am. The Russian defence ministry's later report of 356 downed drones across multiple regions underscores the extensive nature of the threat. Despite the large number of drones involved, Russian air defences managed to intercept and destroy the majority of them, preventing significant damage to the capital.

The attacks on residential areas in Chekhov and Vaulovo, as reported by Governor Vorobyov, indicate that the drones were not solely targeting military or strategic sites. This raises concerns about the potential for civilian casualties and property damage in future attacks. The lack of immediate reports on further damage suggests that the Russian defence systems were effective in protecting critical infrastructure and populated areas.

The timing of the attack, coinciding with Zelensky's anticipated meeting with President Trump, adds a layer of complexity to the geopolitical dynamics at play. The meeting between the two leaders is expected to address various international issues, including the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The drone attack serves as a stark reminder of the volatile situation in the region and the urgent need for diplomatic solutions.
