Japan's defence ministry disclosed that a Chinese naval vessel conducted a live-firing drill within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This incident marks the first time Japan's defence ministry has spotted and disclosed such an activity by China within its EEZ. The exercise took place 180 kilometres southwest of Okinotori island, Japan's southernmost territory.

Details of the Incident

The Chinese Luyang III-class missile destroyer was observed conducting the drill. The incident followed the initial sighting of a fleet comprising three Chinese ships and one Russian navy frigate, located 330 kilometres southwest of Okinotori island as they moved northeast. When the live-fire training commenced, the Russian frigate was also present nearby, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Japanese Response

In response to the drill, Japan's defence ministry mobilised a navy destroyer to surveil and monitor the situation. This action underscores the sensitivity of the region and the strategic importance Japan places on its EEZ. The incident highlights the ongoing maritime activities and tensions in the area, particularly involving China and Russia.
