Novak Djokovic's quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title was unexpectedly cut short by 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca at the French Open. Despite winning the first two sets, Djokovic was defeated 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a thrilling match that lasted nearly five hours. This marks the first time an under-20 player has defeated Djokovic in a Grand Slam event.
Djokovic, who turned 39 last week, started strong, winning five of the first six games. However, Fonseca rallied, breaking Djokovic's serve in the fifth game of the second set. The Brazilian continued his momentum, winning the third and fourth sets to force a decisive fifth set. Fonseca secured the victory with three consecutive aces, advancing to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
With Djokovic's elimination, a new Grand Slam champion is guaranteed in men's tennis. Fonseca's win is a significant upset, given Djokovic's recent dominance, having won nine of the last ten Grand Slam titles. The defeat also marks the exit of top seed Jannik Sinner, who lost in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
