Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of the Prime Minister and Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, today emphasized the importance of medical students embracing humanitarian values alongside their professional skills. Speaking at the annual cultural program and 'Excellence in Education Award 2026' ceremony at the Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital and College, she highlighted the critical need for doctors to serve rural areas.
Addressing Healthcare Disparities
Dr Rahman noted the severe healthcare disparities in Bangladesh, where only 0.83 doctors serve 1,000 people, and one doctor attends to approximately 1,200 to 1,800 patients. She pointed out that 70 to 75 percent of doctors work in urban areas, while about 78 percent of the population resides in villages. Additionally, the number of nurses falls significantly below the World Health Organization's standards.
Call to Action for Future Doctors
Dr Rahman congratulated the award recipients and praised their commitment to both academic and cultural pursuits. She urged the students to return to Bangladesh after their higher studies and training to provide essential medical services, especially during crises. She expressed hope that their dedication would help build a healthcare system where no villager loses their life due to lack of treatment.
Vision for a Better Healthcare System
Dr Rahman envisioned a future where medical expenses no longer contribute to poverty and where preventable deaths among pregnant mothers and newborns are eliminated. She stressed that embracing a commitment to serve the nation from student life could transform the current healthcare landscape.
