State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat has confirmed that Biman Bangladesh Airlines will purchase 10 aircraft from European aerospace giant Airbus. The agreement is expected to be signed by August 31, with the aircraft joining Biman's fleet starting from 2031. This decision aligns with the government's broader strategy to modernize Biman's fleet and enhance its international connectivity. The acquisition will see Airbus jets operating alongside Boeing aircraft, marking a significant shift in Biman's fleet strategy. The decision to include Airbus aircraft in Biman's fleet is driven by the need to maintain a balanced commercial environment with major international partners. State Minister Millat emphasized that the purchase is in line with the government's policy to transform Biman into a mixed-fleet carrier. Aviation expert ATM Nazrul Islam highlighted the benefits of a mixed-fleet strategy, including greater operational flexibility, stronger route adaptability, and long-term commercial efficiency.
Background and Negotiations
The acquisition follows Biman's recent deal to purchase 14 aircraft from US aerospace manufacturer Boeing, comprising eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Airbus has been actively competing for a place in Biman's fleet, submitting a proposal for four A350-900 wide body and six A321neo narrow body aircraft. The negotiations have involved high-level meetings, including discussions with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam and State Minister Millat. The government has prioritized Bangladesh's national and commercial interests in these negotiations.
