Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing this morning. Zhao Leji arrived at the Great Hall around 9:30 AM (local time) after visiting Tiananmen Square.
Prime Minister's Visit to China
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is in Beijing on a four-day official visit at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang. Earlier today, the Prime Minister paid his respects at the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tiananmen Square by placing a special red-green wreath. The national anthems of both countries were played, and the bugle sounded the last post. After laying the wreath, the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence to honor the Chinese revolutionary heroes.
Meetings and MoUs
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Prime Minister Rahman proceeded to the Great Hall of the People for the meeting with Zhao Leji. He is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later today. During his visit, Bangladesh and China signed 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for bilateral cooperation in various areas. Additionally, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) signed a MoU at Beijing’s state guesthouse Diaoyutai.
Economic and Trade Discussions
Prime Minister Rahman addressed an event titled 'Invest Bangladesh' organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) at Diaoyutai hotel. He also held meetings with senior executives from major Chinese industrial groups and representatives from various Chinese agencies to discuss ways to expand investment and trade, aiming to contribute more effectively to Bangladesh's development.
International Engagements
This visit to China is the second leg of Prime Minister Rahman's maiden official overseas visit, following his tour to Malaysia. In Dalian, he participated in the World Economic Forum's Summer Davos 2026, where he met with several world leaders and discussed Bangladesh's climate initiatives. The Prime Minister is scheduled to depart Beijing for Dhaka at 5:00 PM today (local time).
