Senegal's stunning 5-0 victory over Iraq in their final Group I match has kept their World Cup hopes alive. A double by Pape Gueye, along with goals from Habib Diarra, Ismaila Sarr, and Iliman Ndiaye, secured the historic win, making Senegal the first African side to score five goals in a World Cup match.
Early Lead and Red Card
Senegal struck early with Habib Diarra scoring after a slight touch to Abdoulaye Seck's header from a corner. Iraq's hopes were further dashed when defender Rebin Sulaka was red-carded just 13 minutes into the game for fouling Sadio Mane. This was the earliest red card in the tournament so far.
Second-Half Onslaught
Senegal dominated the second half. Ismaila Sarr scored in the 56th minute after a mistake by Zidane Iqbal. Gueye then took center stage, scoring a sublime curling effort and a vicious half volley within minutes of coming on as a substitute. Iliman Ndiaye added another goal late in the game.
Impact on World Cup Standings
The win significantly boosted Senegal's chances of progressing to the last 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. They now have the best goal difference among teams with three points. Iraq, on the other hand, finished their campaign without a point.
