Italy lock forward Niccolo Cannone has been banned for four matches after receiving a red card for head-butting New Zealand's Cam Roigard during a Test match in Wellington on Saturday. The incident occurred in the second half of the game, which New Zealand won 47-17. Initially given a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a red card upon review, forcing Italy to play with 14 men for the final 20 minutes.

Foul Play Review Committee Decision

The Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) found Cannone guilty of physical abuse. The committee stated that the dangerous play warranted a low-end entry point ban of six weeks/matches. However, due to Cannone's acceptance of foul play, his disciplinary record, conduct, and remorse, the FPRC reduced the sanction by two weeks.

Impact on Upcoming Matches

As a result of the suspension, Cannone will miss Italy's Nations Championship Test against Australia in Perth on Saturday. Additionally, he will be sidelined for three matches involving his Italian club, Benetton Rugby, when the new season commences in September. This ban underscores the serious consequences of on-field misconduct in professional rugby.
