A rally and discussion meeting was held in Mongla, Bagerhat, on World Tiger Day to raise awareness about the conservation of the Sundarbans and the Royal Bengal Tiger. The event, held at Mithakali Bazar, saw participation from environmental activists, political leaders, social organisation representatives, and members of the public. The programme was jointly organised by Dharitri Raksha Amra (Dhara), Pashur River Waterkeeper, Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and Badaban Sangha.
Speakers at the event stressed that the Sundarbans is a vital natural resource for Bangladesh and a crucial global ecosystem. They warned that the destruction of the forest would seriously threaten the survival of the Royal Bengal Tiger. The speakers called for the effective implementation of the Tiger Action Plan, protection of the Sundarbans' biodiversity, control of forest pollution, and strict action against wildlife traffickers.
Md Nur Alam Sheikh, Dhara's central leader and Pashur River Waterkeeper, presided over the meeting. Mongla Upazila BNP President Abdul Mannan Howlader attended as the chief guest. The meeting highlighted that tigers, once found in 33 countries, now survive in only eight. It emphasised the need for collaborative efforts by the government, environmental organisations, and the public to conserve the Sundarbans and protect tigers for future generations.
Earlier, a colourful rally with the theme 'Save Sundarbans, Save Tigers' was held through the streets of Mithakali and Chandpai Bazar. The event underscored the importance of the Sundarbans for Bangladesh and its role as a global ecological treasure.
