Bangladesh has achieved a significant milestone in food security by reaching a record food grain stock of 2,396,753 metric tonnes. This is the highest level ever recorded in the country's history, surpassing the stipulated safe benchmark of 1.35 million metric tonnes by an additional 1,046,753 metric tonnes. Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman announced this during a press briefing at the Press Information Department (PID).

Record Stock Strengthens Resilience

Dr Zahed highlighted that the record food grain stock will enhance Bangladesh's capacity to manage any natural disasters or fluctuations in the global market. The government's warehouses currently hold an unprecedented amount of food grains, which will provide a buffer against unforeseen challenges.

Procurement Drive Success

The record stock has been achieved through the successful implementation of the ongoing domestic Boro procurement drive, which began on May 3. As of July 26, a total of 473,005 metric tonnes of paddy and 1,078,836 metric tonnes of rice had been procured. The procurement campaign will continue until August 31, further boosting the stock levels.

Dr Zahed also mentioned other government achievements, including Bangladesh being placed under the lowest tariff rate of 10 percent by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, which strengthens its competitive position in global markets. The Ministry of Commerce has set an ambitious export target of $63.4 billion for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Additionally, the government is committed to reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries by 50 percent by 2030, with plans to expand AI-based speed management systems and enact a new integrated road safety law by 2027. The successful telecast of the FIFA World Cup 2026 without public expenditure and the closing ceremony of the 'Notun Kuri Sports 2025-26' were also highlighted.
