Indonesia's central bank governor, Perry Warjiyo, has resigned early as the country faces a weakening currency and other economic challenges exacerbated by the Middle East war. President Prabowo Subianto accepted Warjiyo's resignation, which was tendered on July 25 for personal reasons. Warjiyo, who had served since 2018, was set to complete his term in 2028. Destry Damayanti, the bank's senior deputy governor, has been appointed as interim governor.

The Indonesian rupiah has been Asia's worst-performing currency, losing around seven percent since the war began, according to Bloomberg News. Surging energy costs have further strained the economy, prompting Bank Indonesia to raise its key interest rate by 100 basis points to 5.75 percent this year.

Indonesia, a net oil importer, has maintained heavily subsidized fuel prices despite high costs, leading to rising consumer prices. In June, consumer prices increased by 3.34 percent, and the economic strain has triggered student protests demanding cuts in excessive government spending.

The Indonesian stock market has also suffered, losing about a third of its value in 2026. President Subianto expressed gratitude to Warjiyo for his dedication over the past seven years and extended his highest appreciation for his service.

The resignation comes at a critical time for Indonesia's economy, which is grappling with the impacts of global geopolitical tensions and domestic economic pressures. The interim leadership under Destry Damayanti will need to navigate these challenges to stabilize the economy.
