A Dhaka court today ordered the detention of Satkhira thana Awami League (AL) general secretary Md Nazrul Islam in a case related to the murder of Daffodil International University student Ramij Uddin during the 2024 July Mass Uprising. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Zunayed issued the order as police sought to place Nazrul on a seven-day remand. The court set a hearing on the remand plea for tomorrow.

According to the case documents, on July 24, 2024, Ramij Uddin, a 21-year-old Computer Science student, participated in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He was shot in the right eye near the Karwan Bazar Metro Rail Station and left to die on the street. Fellow protesters took him to Padma Hospital in Kathalbagan, and he was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

Ramij's father, AKM Rakibul Ahmed, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on September 7, 2024. The incident occurred amid widespread protests and civil unrest during the July Mass Uprising, a significant period of social and political upheaval in Bangladesh.

The detention of Md Nazrul Islam highlights the ongoing efforts to address the violence and deaths that occurred during the 2024 protests. The case underscores the importance of accountability and justice in the aftermath of such significant social movements.
