President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected calls for elections amid the ongoing war with Russia, warning that holding a vote now would be a 'tsunami' that could'split' the country. In a briefing with journalists, Zelensky said that elections during the current conflict pose a huge risk and could lead to dangerous divisions. This comes after his former defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, called for a way to organise elections despite not offering a roadmap. Zelensky criticised Fedorov, suggesting he was being pushed towards 'wrong things'.

Ukraine has suspended elections under martial law, a measure widely supported by the population as the country focuses on fighting off the Russian invasion that began in 2022. Zelensky argued that elections now would be too dangerous, especially considering the challenges of how soldiers, millions of refugees, and people from occupied territories would vote. Additionally, there are concerns about disinformation threats from Russia.

The call for elections by Fedorov came amid political upheaval, with thousands taking to the streets after Zelensky fired the popular defence minister. Despite Fedorov's call, only 15 percent of Ukrainians believe elections should be held before the end of hostilities, according to a poll by the Kyiv Institute of Sociology. Zelensky emphasised the need to avoid disrespect towards armed service members and warned against movements that could lead to dangerous developments.

As Ukraine continues to face daily Russian missile and drone strikes, Zelensky positioned himself as a unifier, stressing the importance of not dividing society and soldiers. His comments came ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day, where several international leaders were expected to attend and discuss bolstering Ukraine's air defences.

The political climate in Ukraine remains tense, with Zelensky's decision to fire Fedorov sparking significant public reaction. Despite the former minister's push for elections, Zelensky's stance appears to align with the majority view among Ukrainians, who prioritise stability and focus on the war effort over immediate electoral processes.
