The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes in late June killed over 6,300 people and flattened 190 buildings, with 856 more sustaining damage.

## Unconsolidated Soils and Construction Flaws

The region's 'unconsolidated' soils, which require specific geotechnical studies for construction, exacerbated the damage, according to engineer Feliciano De Santis, president of the Venezuelan Geologists Society. These loose soils caused the ground to move with greater intensity during the quakes.

Japanese engineer Kit Miyamoto, touring the state with support from Washington, highlighted significant construction flaws in La Guaira's infrastructure. He noted that while large quantities of steel were used, the connections to the foundation were inadequate.

## Government Response and Future Measures

Public fury about the government's slow response to the quakes is widespread. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez has promised to deliver around 4,000 housing units this year. Engineer Felix Ojeda from Venezuela's Engineering Order emphasized the need for retrofitting and strengthening buildings, as well as taking down unsafe structures.
