In a significant move to support Ukraine's defence against ongoing Russian attacks, the UK has pledged £100 million ($135 million) to boost the nation's air defence capabilities. This commitment includes the provision of Patriot missiles, alongside other essential equipment such as air defence interceptors, large-calibre artillery rounds, and drones. The UK defence ministry stated that this equipment will be delivered before winter, aiming to protect Ukraine's critical infrastructure, civilians, and armed forces.

## Enhancing Ukraine's Air Defence

Ukraine heavily relies on advanced air defence systems, particularly the US Patriot interceptors, to safeguard its skies from Russian ballistic missile strikes. However, a shortage of these interceptors has been reported since the United States and Israel went to war with Iran in February, leading to a diversion of supplies. The UK's contribution is crucial as it seeks to fill this gap and provide much-needed support to Ukraine.

## UK's Continued Support for Ukraine

Britain has been one of Ukraine's most substantial backers since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. This latest commitment underscores the UK's ongoing support, which includes not only military aid but also the release of information on components for the long-range missile, SCALP, to enable local assembly lines in Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's recent visit to Ukraine further highlighted the UK's commitment to supporting Kyiv through the winter months.

New UK defence minister Wes Streeting emphasised the importance of this support, stating, 'Both the Prime Minister and I heard loud and clear on our first visits to Kyiv the importance of supporting Ukraine through this winter, as Putin prepares to use winter as a weapon by continuing barbaric attacks against civilian and energy targets.' Streeting will co-chair his first meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, which comprises 50 nations providing military aid to Ukraine, on Tuesday.

This commitment is part of a broader NATO programme aimed at supporting Ukraine. The delivery of advanced air defence systems is critical for Ukraine as it faces continued aggression from Russia, particularly as winter approaches and the risk of intensified attacks increases. The UK's pledge not only provides immediate military support but also sends a strong signal of international solidarity with Ukraine.
