The Palestinian health ministry has reported that Israeli forces shot dead two teenagers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah in the central West Bank, on Wednesday night. Omar Mohammad Naji al-Nassan, 19, and Khalil Rasem Khalil Shahada, 16, were killed during what the Israeli army described as a 'violent riot'. The incident occurred following a confrontation between Israeli settlers and Palestinian villagers, according to local officials.

Amin Abu Alia, the head of the Al-Mughayyir village council, stated that Israeli settlers attempted to steal sheep from two homes in the village. This led to a confrontation, after which the Israeli army imposed a siege on the village and placed snipers inside buildings. Abu Alia claims that the Israeli forces opened live fire on residents who tried to confront the settlers.

The Israeli army, however, stated that it had secured the entrance to the village to facilitate the return of livestock belonging to Israeli civilians that had been found in the area. The army reported that during their activity, a violent riot broke out with terrorists hurling cinder blocks and stones at the forces. In response, the army fired at key instigators to remove the threat. The management of the incident is currently under review.

The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed that the two teenagers were critically wounded by live fire during the clashes. Nassan was shot in the neck, and Shahada in the back. They were transferred to hospitals in Ramallah, where they were pronounced dead. Footage from the Ramallah medical centre showed mourners gathering around one of the bodies, which was shrouded in a Palestinian flag, chanting in tribute to the deceased.

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, has experienced a surge in violence since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip following Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023. Attacks by settlers on Palestinians have become almost daily occurrences. According to an AFP tally based on Palestinian official figures, at least 1,105 Palestinians, including militants, have been killed by fire from Israeli soldiers or settlers. Conversely, at least 48 Israelis, both civilians and security forces, have been killed in the West Bank in attacks carried out by Palestinians or during clashes with Israeli forces, according to Israeli official figures.

The ongoing conflict and violence in the region underscore the deep-seated tensions and the complex dynamics at play. The international community continues to call for restraint and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, highlighting the need for dialogue and understanding between the parties involved.
