Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that Saudi Arabia will not be able to contain the Tehran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The rebels, also known as Ansarullah, have been ramping up attacks on the kingdom. Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi told Defa Press, 'Saudi Arabia will certainly be unable to contain Yemen and Ansarullah or remain safe from their attacks. As we have seen in recent days, the more Saudi Arabia attacks, the more it is hit in return.'

## Escalation in Yemen

Yemen has become the latest front in the Middle East war that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The Houthi attacks and their attempt to blockade Saudi Arabia's Red Sea ports followed tit-for-tat strikes in early July after an Iranian plane arrived in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Yemen has been embroiled in more than a decade of war, and the latest fighting has upended a 2022 truce with the Saudi-backed internationally-recognised government.

## Strategic Implications

This week, a Yemeni minister told AFP that the Houthi rebels are plotting to seize land along the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which would allow them to further threaten the vital shipping artery. Three Houthi military sources and a spokesman for the Yemeni government forces battling them near the waterway also told AFP the rebels are planning to advance south from their current territory. The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a critical maritime chokepoint, and its control would significantly impact global trade routes.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has far-reaching implications for regional stability and international trade. The Houthis' ability to strike deep into Saudi territory demonstrates their growing military capabilities and the escalating nature of the conflict. The involvement of external powers, including Iran's support for the Houthis and Saudi Arabia's military campaign, further complicates the situation.

The potential seizure of the Bab al-Mandab Strait by the Houthis would have severe consequences for global trade, as the strait is a key passage for oil shipments and commercial vessels. This development underscores the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, as military escalations are likely to result in further instability and humanitarian crises.
