India launched its first hydrogen-powered train on Friday, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to modernize its rail network and reduce carbon emissions. The 10-coach train operates on an 89-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, powered by a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. This system is described by officials as the world's most powerful for a train.

## Green Rail Initiative

The launch of the hydrogen train is part of India's broader push to modernize its extensive rail network, one of the largest in the world. The railway ministry emphasized that the train was 'developed entirely in India,' though key components, including the fuel cells, were imported. Alongside the train launch, the ministry inaugurated the country's largest railway hydrogen storage and refuelling facility in Jind, with a capacity of 3,000 kilograms.

## Global Hydrogen Train Trend

Hydrogen trains use fuel cells to generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water and steam. With this launch, India joins other nations such as Germany, Japan, China, and the United States that are either testing or operating hydrogen-powered trains. The pilot project cost around $12 million, which is significantly more expensive than a comparable conventional service, but officials anticipate costs will decrease as the technology matures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the launch as 'a very significant day in the direction of self-reliant India and sustainable development.' India's railway network, which carried 7.41 billion passengers and 1.67 billion tonnes of freight last year, has seen substantial investment in recent years aimed at upgrading infrastructure, improving safety, and expanding capacity. The introduction of the hydrogen train is another step towards a greener and more efficient rail system.
