The volcano, located 35 kilometers from Guatemala City, forced over 1,700 people to evacuate on Monday when it began its activity.

## Volcanic Activity Ceases

The eruption, which lasted 50 hours, saw lava flows down the slopes and ash plumes rising up to six kilometers. However, on Wednesday, the volcano appeared calm, emitting only faint gas and ash, according to an AFP journalist. Local farmer Bernabe Marroquin, who has lived through previous eruptions, described the situation as normal for those in the area.

Guatemalan emergency services, Conred, declared it safe for evacuated residents to return home, with director Claudine Ogaldes stating, 'It is now safe to return. We are no longer asking people to evacuate, but urge communities to take precautions, as the volcano could erupt again at any moment.'

## Evacuation and Safety Precautions

Fuego, situated on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' is known for its frequent eruptions. Conred had declared the most severe danger alert in nearby departments, including Escuintla, Sacatepequez, and Chimaltenango. This recent eruption follows similar incidents in 2023 and 2024, which also led to evacuations.

In 2018, a significant eruption resulted in 215 fatalities and left a similar number missing after rivers of lava destroyed a village. Despite the end of this eruption, the institute recommends that residents remain vigilant due to potential hazards such as ash and burning debris.

As the volcano quietens, some evacuees had already returned to their homes voluntarily. The institute's statement highlights the ongoing need for caution and preparedness in the region.
