# Western Europe Wildfires: Over 200,000 Evacuated as Major Cities Face Threat

The relentless wildfires sweeping across western Europe have prompted authorities to order the evacuation of towns near Bordeaux, France, and around 63,000 people in the Madrid region. The fires, which have scorched 14,000 hectares in southwest France alone, are threatening major urban centers and have forced NASA to evacuate one of its deep space communications facilities in Spain.

In France, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the deployment of 500 additional soldiers to support firefighters battling the blazes. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that more than 140,000 people have been evacuated from threatened areas in the southwest.

Spain is also severely impacted, with Madrid's regional government emergency management chief Carlos Novillo stating that a wildfire near Madrid is at its peak and impossible to control. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the emergency coordination center and pledged all available resources to combat the fires.

The European Union has responded by deploying specialized water-bombing planes to both Spain and France. Additionally, Spanish police have arrested a man for allegedly starting a fire in the Castilla y Leon region using farm machinery, in breach of a ban on such activities in tinderbox conditions.

Residents in affected areas have shared harrowing tales of escape, with many fleeing with only the clothes on their backs. The wildfires have not only caused widespread evacuations but have also disrupted communication with space probes due to the evacuation of NASA's facility.
