The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed 600 lives, according to figures published by the World Health Organization (WHO). This grim milestone was reached only three days after the death toll surpassed 500. The outbreak, declared in mid-May, has seen 1,759 confirmed cases in the DRC, with 600 confirmed deaths. Additionally, two deaths have been reported in neighboring Uganda, where 17 patients have recovered out of 20 confirmed cases.

## Outbreak Details and Challenges

The WHO's representative in the DRC, Anne Ancia, stated that the outbreak continues to expand, and its true scale has not yet been fully established. The case fatality rate stands at 34 percent, with 285 patients having recovered. There are 304 suspected cases under investigation. The outbreak, driven by the rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola, is concentrated in Ituri province but has spread to four provinces.

## Response Efforts and Trials

Efforts to control the outbreak are complicated by population movements, persistent insecurity, and a fragile health system. Treatment centers are operating at 90 percent capacity, with plans to add 300 more beds. Over 10,000 contacts of infected people are being monitored, though the follow-up rate of 82 percent falls short of the WHO's target of 95 percent. Laboratory capacity has increased significantly, from 30 tests per day to over 2,000 tests daily.

## Clinical Trials and Funding

Clinical trials for two potential treatments, the monoclonal antibody MBP134 and the antiviral drug remdesivir, began on July 2. The WHO has requested $115 million to strengthen its Ebola response, of which 32 percent has been received to date. The outbreak has also impacted South Kivu province, where clashes between the Congolese armed forces and the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group have exacerbated the situation.

## Humanitarian and Security Concerns

UN rights chief Volker Turk called for an immediate end to the fighting, highlighting its impact on civilians and the risk of further displacement. The humanitarian needs in the region remain substantial, particularly regarding civilian protection, access to food, and essential health services. Other diseases such as malaria and measles continue to spread, adding to the region's health crisis.
