Danish intelligence has issued a stark warning that Russia is actively preparing sabotage operations against Denmark, particularly its defence industry. This warning comes in the wake of heightened tensions between Russia and European nations, following a series of alleged sabotage attacks and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Emil Graesholm, head of counterintelligence at the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET), revealed in an interview with Berlingske that Russian security services are actively recruiting 'completely ordinary Danes' for these operations. These individuals may be tasked with missions such as taking photos and reporting on access and security conditions around defence facilities.

Graesholm emphasized the importance of the defence industry taking necessary security measures to protect itself. He noted that many actors in the sector are already working on enhancing their security protocols. 'It is fundamentally important that the defence industry, in the broad sense, take the necessary security measures so that it is able to protect itself,' he told broadcaster TV2.

The warning from Danish intelligence follows a series of incidents across Europe that have been attributed to Russian sabotage. These include an explosive-laden drone incident in Germany, which the EU's foreign policy chief described as 'state-sponsored terrorism.' In response, EU countries have summoned Russia's envoys and discussed imposing fresh sanctions.

Russia has been accused of escalating sabotage attacks against European backers of Ukraine as its military faces challenges on the front lines. The Kremlin's war in Ukraine, launched in 2022, has strained relations with Western nations and led to a series of retaliatory measures and increased security concerns across Europe.

For Denmark, this alert underscores the need for heightened vigilance and robust security measures within its defence sector. The potential for Russian sabotage not only threatens national security but also highlights the broader geopolitical tensions that continue to impact European stability.
