Bangladesh is expecting a prompt response from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India regarding the extradition of former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that all legal requirements for the extraditions have been fulfilled and expressed hope for a swift response from both governments.

## Extradition Efforts

Benazir Ahmed was arrested in the UAE following an Interpol Red Notice. At the request of the UAE authorities, Bangladesh submitted all necessary extradition documents within three days, despite being given a 30-day deadline. Regarding the three suspects, including the prime accused Faisal Karim Masud, Bangladesh has also forwarded all necessary documents to the Indian authorities seeking their extradition.

## Legal Proceedings and Treaty

The three suspects are currently facing trial in India on charges of illegal border infiltration, which could delay the extradition process. However, under the extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, they may still be handed over to Bangladesh even while the Indian legal proceedings are ongoing.

## Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The extradition of these suspects is crucial for Bangladesh as it seeks to hold individuals accountable for serious crimes. The swift return of these suspects would demonstrate international cooperation in addressing criminal activities and contribute to the rule of law within the country.
