Buddha Purnima, the principal religious festival for Buddhists, is being celebrated today. According to Buddhist beliefs, Gautama Buddha was born on this day nearly 2,500 years ago. This full moon day in the month of Vaisakh commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Gautama Buddha.

The core philosophy of Buddha is centered around non-violence, equality, friendship, and peaceful coexistence. Buddha taught that hatred can never be quelled by hatred, nor violence by violence. Instead, non-violence and non-hatred are the ways to overcome violence and hatred.

Buddhists across the country are celebrating the day with Buddha Puja, taking vows, offering food, and other rituals. Buddha Purnima is a public holiday in Bangladesh today.

Various social, political, and cultural organizations have extended their greetings and congratulations to the Buddhist community. Buddhist temples across the country will host Buddha Puja, lighting of lamps, peace processions, religious discussions, joint prayers, and discussion sessions.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus extended his heartfelt greetings to the Buddhist community on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. In a statement yesterday, he said that Gautama Buddha illuminated humanity by rising above violence, hatred, and greed. Buddha preached the message of non-violence for establishing peace and welfare among people.
