# BNP Leader Rizvi Asserts Bangladesh's Democracy Cannot Revert to Former State

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has stated that due to ongoing political conflict, the country's existing democracy cannot be taken back to its previous state. In an interview on the occasion of International Democracy Day, Rizvi stressed the importance of the 'rule of law' as a fundamental condition for democracy and noted that constructive criticism and political opposition are natural aspects of a democratic system.

## Democratic Journey and Challenges

Rizvi reflected on the tumultuous journey towards democracy in Bangladesh, mentioning the sacrifices and hardships faced during the process. He highlighted the significance of the 'victorious journey of democracy' that began on August 5, 2024, and the establishment of a democratic government through the election of February 12. He emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders—government, political parties, media, and judiciary—to protect and strengthen democracy.

## Role of Institutions and Constructive Criticism

The BNP leader called for the protection and strengthening of institutions that guarantee civil rights, stressing that the coordination of media, parliament, political parties, and courts is essential for the protection of democracy. He noted a positive change in the National Parliament under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, where the opposition can now offer constructive criticism. However, he urged against using indecent or uncivil language in political discourse.

Rizvi also highlighted the importance of a free and objective media in developing democracy, criticizing the intense control over freedom of expression during the past 17 years. He called for the independence and neutrality of state pillars such as the judiciary, administration, and media to ensure a permanent free and democratic environment in the country.

On International Democracy Day, Rizvi extended his respect to all democracy-loving people worldwide and the martyrs and injured in the struggle for rights. He congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the new democratic era, urging everyone to remain united and cautious in their political demands and differences to sustain democratic practice.
