The Bangladesh Khetmajoor Somiti has expressed grief and demanded compensation for the families of 15 farmworkers who died in a truck accident near the Jamuna Bridge in Tangail. The organization also called for ensuring proper medical treatment for the injured. In a statement on Monday, the president, Prof Fazlur Rahman, executive president Anwar Hossain, and general secretary Arnab Sarkar made these demands. The leaders noted that poor and helpless farmworkers often travel long distances for work and return home during festivals, often resorting to unsafe means of transport due to cost constraints. They highlighted previous incidents, such as a truck accident in Brahmanbaria during the rice harvesting season, and criticized the administration for not taking effective measures to ensure the safe travel of laborers. The accident occurred early Monday morning when a truck carrying rod overturned, killing 15 farmworkers who were returning home to reduce travel expenses. Thirteen of the deceased were from Manda Upazila in Naogaon.
