## At a glance

- One polling centre for every 2,000 voters on average.
- One polling booth for every 600 male and 500 female voters.
- Special provisions for by-elections with increased thresholds.

The Election Commission (EC) has amended the guidelines on the establishment and management of polling centres for local government elections, increasing the number of voters allocated to each polling booth. This information was disclosed in a gazette notification signed by Election Commission Senior Assistant Secretary (Election Support-3) Md. Rashid Mia.

## Revised Voter Allocation

According to the amended Guidelines on the Establishment and Management of Polling Centres for Local Government Elections-2025, one polling centre will, on average, be established for every 2,000 voters. Specifically, one polling booth will generally be designated for every 600 male voters and every 500 female voters.

## Special Provisions for By-Elections

The guidelines further state that if a by-election is held for a single post, one polling booth will generally be designated for every 600 male voters and every 500 female voters. If necessary, more than one secret booth may be installed in each polling booth.

## Polling Centre Requirements

At least one polling centre must be established within the boundary of each general ward. However, if required in view of practical considerations, more than one polling centre may be established.

## Previous Guidelines

Previously, the guidelines provided for one polling booth for every 400 male voters and 300 to 350 female voters in general elections and one polling booth for every 500 male voters and 400 female voters in by-elections. The amended guidelines have increased these voter thresholds.

## Significance and Implications

These changes are significant as they aim to streamline the election process and potentially reduce the number of polling centres required. This could lead to cost savings and more efficient management of resources during elections. However, it is crucial to ensure that these changes do not compromise the accessibility and convenience for voters, especially in densely populated areas.
