Sharmeen Akhter, a visually impaired resident of Satkhira district, has finally secured a job at the state-owned Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) as a junior officer. This appointment fulfills a commitment made by the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain, during his visit to the Satkhira district hospital on July 26. The minister formally handed over the appointment letter to Sharmeen at the health ministry conference room at the secretariat. Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Health Affairs, Dr SM Ziauddin Hyder, and the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Professor Dr Pravath Chandra Biswas, were also present. Sharmeen, who holds graduate and postgraduate degrees in government and politics from Jahangirnagar University, will join EDCL on August 2. Her employment will be confirmed after successfully completing a six-month probationary period.

Sharmeen expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the health minister for their support. In a tearful voice, she said, "The health minister committed to providing me a job after knowing my situation, and he delivered within a short time. Now I will be able to support my helpless family. I am expressing my sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the health minister for this reason."

The health minister highlighted Sharmeen's situation, stating, "She is very helpless. Her family has no employed person, and she has completed higher education. I committed to providing her a job, and she has now got a job at EDCL."

Dr SM Ziauddin Hyder, the PM’s special assistant, emphasized that the job was provided in line with the electoral pledges made by the current government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. According to these pledges, every person with a disability will be provided with rehabilitation and placed in suitable jobs according to their qualifications, abilities, and skills.

Sharmeen's journey to this appointment was marked by her persistent efforts and the support she received from the health minister. Her story underscores the government's commitment to fulfilling its promises and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
