Success in the workplace no longer equates to higher positions and greater salaries for the new generation of employees. Today's young professionals are placing greater importance on personal time and mental well-being rather than the responsibilities and stress that come with higher positions. Even with the prospect of doubling their salary, many skilled employees are readily declining promotions.

This inclination towards personal time is not unique to any one individual. A 2025 survey by the UK-based international service provider network Deloitte indicates that only 6% of the current generation of employees dream of attaining higher positions or leadership roles. Others are prioritizing personal development and work-life balance alongside their jobs. Young professionals no longer equate career success solely with reaching the top. Take, for example, 26-year-old software engineer Kelin Moss. Despite having four years of experience, he refuses promotions. To him, a promotion means more meetings, more responsibilities, and sacrificing his freedom. He works a fixed number of hours a day and spends the rest of his time reading books on the beach or chatting with friends. Although he earns around $100,000 a year, he turned down a $200,000 salary offer because he wants a life where mental peace is easily attainable. In his words, 'I don't want a promotion. I clearly say it's time for me to leave when my work is done.'

In Bangladesh's corporate culture, promotions are still considered a major achievement. However, this mentality is gradually diminishing among the new generation of employees. Particularly those in IT, freelancing, or creative professions are prioritizing job autonomy over higher positions. Many are opting for smaller but independent work environments instead of the pressure of big positions in large companies. People are now realizing that to be happy at the end of the day, it's essential to have a world outside of work. However, as a developing country, bypassing promotions can sometimes pose financial risks.

Financial planners say that not taking a promotion or avoiding higher positions is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if one chooses this path, it's crucial to have a solid financial plan from the start. Because without a promotion, salaries don't increase significantly in the long term. Therefore, it's necessary to invest wisely from a young age to ensure financial security in the future, so that your savings can work for you even when you're not working.

The goal of a career is no longer just to become a CEO. The mantra now is to maintain good mental health and continue working creatively. Those who can positively embrace this change are finding the true joy of life within their work.
