Bangladesh today launched a biomedical waste management facility in Sirajganj to ensure safe collection, treatment, and disposal of healthcare waste, benefiting more than three million people while promoting environmental protection.

## Inauguration and Project Details

The Department of Environment inaugurated the Common Treatment Facility (CTF) for biomedical waste management in Sirajganj Sadar. This project on sustainable plastics use and marine litter prevention is implemented with technical support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funding from the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

## Capacity and Benefits

The facility is capable of managing over 950 tonnes of biomedical waste annually and recovering around 130 tonnes of recyclable materials each year, helping reduce health risks and environmental pollution.

## Ministerial Remarks

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood said the facility promotes circular economy principles through resource recovery and could serve as a model for similar projects across the country. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, in virtual remarks, said the initiative would strengthen public health and environmental sustainability by improving biomedical waste management systems.

## International Support and Future Prospects

UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gitanjali Singh said the project demonstrates the value of partnerships in advancing sustainable healthcare waste management and environmental protection. The successful implementation of this facility is expected to pave the way for more such initiatives, enhancing public health and environmental standards nationwide.
