Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has raised concerns over Bangladesh's high population growth rate, which has hovered around 3 percent for the past 10 to 15 years. In response, the government is launching a comprehensive birth control campaign aimed at reducing this rate to a more sustainable level.

## Campaign to Promote Family Planning

The campaign will focus on raising awareness about family planning among mothers, particularly in rural areas. The government plans to restore the availability of birth control products at the rural level to ensure easy access for all.

## Modernizing Healthcare Infrastructure

In addition to the birth control campaign, the minister announced plans to modernize healthcare infrastructure. Modern pathological laboratories will be set up in upazila hospitals to improve disease diagnosis and treatment. The government will also import necessary equipment this month to facilitate these upgrades.

## Expanding Dialysis Services

To enhance healthcare services, 50 beds are being added to the District Medical College Hospital, along with 10 dialysis beds in district and upazila-level hospitals. This expansion aims to provide better dialysis services to the population.

## Historical Context and Future Plans

The minister drew a comparison with past developments in the health sector. He noted that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman established 31-bed hospitals in every upazila, which were later expanded to 50 beds by Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia. Under the current leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, each upazila hospital is being modernized to 101 beds.

## Significance and Implications

The rapid population growth poses significant challenges for Bangladesh, including strain on resources, healthcare services, and infrastructure. By implementing these measures, the government aims to ensure a better quality of life for its citizens and sustainable development.
