# Bangladesh Reports Four Additional Child Deaths from Suspected Measles

Four more children have died of suspected measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This brings the total number of deaths from confirmed measles and suspected measles symptoms to 967 between March 15 and August 30.

The DGHS control room disclosed this information in a recent press release. In the same period, 1,151 new suspected measles cases were reported, pushing the total number of suspected cases to 156,829.

Of the newly reported cases, 365 were confirmed as measles, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 19,218 since March 15. During this period, 137,347 patients with suspected measles were admitted to hospitals, of whom 132,292 have recovered and been discharged.

While four deaths were attributed to suspected measles in the past 24 hours, no deaths from confirmed measles were reported during this time. Since March 15, 868 children have died from suspected measles, and 99 have died from confirmed measles.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects children. It is characterized by fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash. The disease can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, particularly in young children and those with weakened immune systems.

The recent surge in measles cases and deaths underscores the importance of vaccination. The measles vaccine, which is part of the routine immunization schedule in Bangladesh, is highly effective in preventing the disease. However, coverage rates need to be consistently high to achieve herd immunity and protect vulnerable populations.

The DGHS continues to monitor the situation closely and is working with health partners to enhance surveillance, improve case management, and increase vaccination coverage. Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted to educate communities about the importance of measles vaccination and the signs and symptoms of the disease.
