# Dengue Outbreak in Khulna Division: 14 Deaths and 3,690 Hospitalisations Reported

The dengue situation in Khulna Division has reached a critical point, with four patients dying in the past five days despite massive crash programmes by authorities and various organisations. A dengue patient died at Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of dengue fatalities in the division to 14, including 13 in Khulna district alone. According to the divisional director of health, 135 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in the division over the past 24 hours. Of these, 113 were admitted to government hospitals and 22 to private hospitals. Since the beginning of the year, 3,690 dengue patients have been hospitalised in the division, with 3,162 recovering and being discharged. Currently, 476 patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals, while 38 others have been referred elsewhere for advanced treatment.

## Rising Admissions and Fatalities

Khulna district recorded the highest number of new admissions, with 53 patients, including 27 at KMCH. Dr Sheikh Md Mosharraf Hossain, Khulna Divisional Director of Health, confirmed that one dengue patient died at KMCH in the past 24 hours. Another patient died in Khulna on Monday, while two deaths were reported on August 14. He noted that 11 of the 13 dengue deaths in Khulna district occurred at KMCH, with one death reported in Bagerhat district. In the past 24 hours, 80 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in Khulna district, including 27 at KMCH. Currently, 125 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at KMCH, while another 187 are admitted to other hospitals in the district. KMCH Superintendent Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman reported an increasing pressure of dengue patients every day.

## Intense Control and Awareness Campaigns

Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has intensified mosquito control and public awareness campaigns as dengue infections continue to rise. According to KCC data, Ward No. 30 has recorded the highest number of dengue patients with 111 cases, followed by Ward No. 29 with 100 cases. Ward No. 28, identified as a red zone, recorded 80 cases, and Ward No. 22 reported 77 cases. KCC has divided the city's wards into different risk zones and launched intensified mosquito control operations using fogging machines, hand sprays, and wheelbarrow fogging machines. Mobile courts have also been conducting drives since Saturday to destroy mosquito breeding grounds and remove stagnant water from residential and commercial premises.

## Calls for Continued Vigilance

KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju urged city residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean, remove stagnant water, and remain protected from mosquito bites, particularly during daytime. He warned that the outbreak might continue for another two to three months. Dr Sujat Ahmed, deputy director of KMCH, echoed the call for regular cleaning of house, office premises, and open spaces, especially vehicles' tyres and green coconut husks where rainwater is dumped. He also urged the authority concerned and city dwellers to regularly clean drainages and other open ditches to destroy mosquito larvae.
