# UGC Announces Five-Year Initiative to Improve Higher Education Quality

In a significant move to transform higher education in Bangladesh, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a five-year action plan aimed at improving the quality of education, enhancing student skills, and aligning university programs with labor market demands. The initiative seeks to equip students with both technical and soft skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for the workforce.

## Comprehensive Action Plan

The plan, articulated by UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, includes the introduction of mandatory internships for fourth-year students across all departments within five years. These internships will be carried out in various sectors, including industry, commerce, and government organizations. Additionally, students will receive education in soft skills development and moral values, with financial assistance provided to those participating in these programs.

A key component of the plan involves the development of national trainers from master trainers. These trainers will support quality assurance, research, innovation, and academic leadership in universities. The initiative also includes efforts to strengthen the research culture, expand fellowships to address the shortage of skilled teachers, and enhance the capacity of underperforming universities.

Recently, 20 teachers were recognized as national trainers after completing a 10-day training program. Over the next two years, these trainers will provide professional development training to approximately 3,500 senior teachers across universities nationwide.

The action plan was highlighted during the closing ceremony of the second ‘Training of Trainers’ program, which was part of the Senior Faculty Professional Development Program organized under the Higher Education Advancement through Technology (HEAT) Project at BRAC CDM in Savar.

Several notable figures, including UGC Member Professor Dr. Masuma Habib, British Council Bangladesh Country Director Stephen Forbes, and HEAT Project Director Professor Dr. Asaduzzaman, were present at the event.
