Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has urged for the promotion of tolerance, free thinking, morality, and justice in higher education institutions to mitigate social unrest, inequality, and corruption. Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day international conference on 'Philosophy for Peace' in Dhaka, Ahmed highlighted that nurturing ethical values, accountability, and critical thinking in universities is crucial, as graduates often take up significant leadership roles in various sectors.

Ahmed advocated for forgiveness, dialogue, and justice-oriented reconciliation over revenge, emphasizing that a peaceful and humane society starts within families and educational institutions. He underscored that national development should be balanced by ethics, humanity, and social justice, not just economic growth. To support these ideals, the UGC is implementing training programs and workshops on soft skills, ethics, and values as part of extracurricular activities, with training modules currently in development.
