Transactions through Bangla QR have almost doubled in number and nearly tripled in monetary value since the introduction of the mandatory "One Country, One QR" system in Bangladesh. From July 1, 2026, Bangladesh made it mandatory to replace all proprietary QR codes with a single Bangla QR under the "One Country, One QR" initiative, said a press release here today. At the beginning of July, an average of around 1.78 lakh transactions were conducted daily through Bangla QR, involving purchases worth approximately Taka 37.33 crore per day. However, in the past week, the average number of daily Bangla QR transactions increased to around 3.03 lakh while the average daily transaction value surged to approximately Taka 110.38 crore. Meanwhile, the number of Bangla QR merchants has also increased significantly. As of July 21, 2026, the number of merchants using Bangla QR had risen from around 16 lakh to more than 30 lakh. Alongside private commercial banks, state-owned banks are also playing a leading role in expanding Bangla QR services. The rapid growth in the use of Bangla QR is expected to make a significant contribution to the expansion of digital transactions in Bangladesh, promoting a more convenient, efficient and inclusive digital payment ecosystem.

## Understanding Bangla QR

Bangla QR is a unified QR code system introduced by the Bangladesh government to streamline digital payments. Unlike proprietary QR codes, Bangla QR is a single, standardized code that can be used across all merchants and banks. This standardization aims to simplify transactions, enhance interoperability, and boost the overall digital payment ecosystem in the country.

## Impact on Merchants and Consumers

The significant increase in Bangla QR transactions has had a positive impact on both merchants and consumers. For merchants, the adoption of Bangla QR means they can accept payments from a wider range of customers, thereby increasing their sales. For consumers, it offers a more convenient and secure way to make payments, reducing the need for cash transactions.

## Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The surge in Bangla QR transactions is a crucial step towards achieving a cashless economy in Bangladesh. By promoting digital payments, the government aims to reduce the reliance on physical cash, enhance financial inclusion, and improve the efficiency of transactions. This move is expected to contribute significantly to the country's economic growth and development.
