The tax-free income limit for individual taxpayers has been increased to nearly 4 lakh taka from the current 3.5 lakh taka. This was announced by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the budget presented to the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday. The increased limit will be applicable for the upcoming fiscal year and will continue until the 2027-28 fiscal year.

The previous interim government had also announced an increase in the tax-free income limit, which the current BNP government has continued. Analysts believe this will provide relief to limited and middle-income families.

Special categories of taxpayers, such as women, those above 65 years, third gender, disabled individuals, gazetted freedom fighters, and injured participants of the July 2024 uprising, will receive additional benefits. The tax rates have also been restructured, potentially increasing the tax burden on some taxpayers.

Taxpayers will now be able to file returns throughout the year, with incentives for early filing. The incentives include a 5% or 25,000 taka reduction in payable tax for returns filed in the first quarter (July-September).
