China's exports in June surged more than expected, driven by the global AI boom and increased demand for chips and computing equipment. The General Administration of Customs reported a 27.0 percent year-on-year rise in exports, surpassing the 19.0 percent forecast. Imports also soared by 36.0 percent, exceeding the estimated 26.1 percent. The surge in exports is largely attributed to the recent increase in semiconductor prices due to the AI boom.

## Impact of Global AI Boom

The value of China's semiconductor exports more than doubled from the same month a year ago and rose $2.7 billion from May. Data processing equipment shipments also increased by 53.1 percent year-on-year. However, the expansion is mainly due to higher prices rather than increased volume, as the volume of semiconductor exports actually fell year-on-year in June.

## Trade Tensions and Economic Impact

Despite the positive export figures, China faces ongoing trade tensions with major economies. Shipments to the United States rose 13.9 percent to $43.5 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $28.9 billion. China also recorded a trade surplus of $32.9 billion with the European Union in June. These imbalances continue to be a source of friction. Additionally, the volume of rare earths exports sank 34 percent last month as Beijing tightened restrictions on these critical elements.
