# Rajshahi Festival Speakers Highlight Youth Leadership for Climate Justice and Gender Equality

At the closing ceremony of the Divisional Youth Festival held at the auditorium of New Government Degree College in Rajshahi, speakers emphasized the critical role of youth leadership in addressing climate change and achieving gender equality. The festival, themed 'Sustainable climate justice and gender equality will be ensured through the advancement of youth initiatives,' brought together administrative officials, stakeholders, and young climate champions to discuss the importance of integrating youth voices into decision-making processes.

Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam, addressing the event as the chief guest, highlighted that government initiatives alone are insufficient to tackle the impacts of climate change. He stressed the need for the effective integration of youth knowledge, innovation, creativity, and social responsibility. 'The new generation must not only become aware of environmental and climate issues but also identify problems in their respective areas and lead in solving them,' he said.

The festival, organized by the DASCOH Foundation and Barendrabhumi Social Development Organisation, featured various competitions and discussions aimed at promoting youth-led initiatives on climate and gender equality. Events included quiz and extempore speech competitions, an 'Idea Competition,' a wall magazine exhibition, and Gambhira performances on climate change and women's development. These activities showcased the innovative power and leadership potential of the youth in addressing pressing social and environmental issues.

Professor Dr. Shikha Sarker, Principal of New Government Degree College, presided over the closing ceremony. She emphasized the importance of equal participation of women and youth at all levels of society to build a just and climate-resilient community. 'Climate adaptation and sustainable development are not possible without the participation of women,' she noted. The event also saw speeches from Deputy Director of Rajshahi Department of Women's Affairs Israt Jahan, Vice-Principal of the college Prof. Motiur Rahman, and other key figures.

The festival is part of the 'Gender Equality Transforms Climate Action (GETCA)' project, implemented by a consortium of development organizations led by Wave Foundation in five districts of Rajshahi and Barisal divisions. Through initiatives like the Divisional Youth Festival, the project aims to empower young people to take the lead in creating sustainable solutions for climate justice and gender equality.
