In a significant breakthrough against illegal gold smuggling, police arrested two suspected members of a gold smuggling syndicate and recovered smuggled gold jewellery worth approximately Tk 89 lakh during a special operation in the capital's Dhanmondi area. The arrestees, identified as Gobinda Mondal, 52, and Rajan Chandra Sarkar, 35, were apprehended following a tip-off about a consignment of smuggled gold being transported through Dhanmondi to the Hazaribagh area.

Acting on confidential information, police from Dhanmondi Model Police Station set up a checkpoint in front of Mughal Kabab House on Road No. 27 in Dhanmondi. At around 2:20 pm, officers intercepted a motorcycle carrying the two suspects and recovered the smuggled gold jewellery. The motorcycle used to transport the gold was also seized.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects admitted that the recovered gold had been brought into the country illegally by evading customs duties and was being transported for distribution through a smuggling network. Legal action has been initiated against the accused.

Gold smuggling is a persistent issue in Bangladesh, often involving sophisticated networks that evade customs and law enforcement. The seized gold, valued at approximately Tk 89 lakh, underscores the scale of illegal activities and the need for continued vigilance by authorities.

The operation in Dhanmondi highlights the police's proactive measures in combating smuggling activities. With the arrest of Gobinda Mondal and Rajan Chandra Sarkar, authorities hope to dismantle parts of the smuggling network and prevent further illegal activities.
