# Sunamganj Floods: Rising River Levels Inundate Low-Lying Areas

Sunamganj district is grappling with flooding in several low-lying regions as river water levels surge due to heavy rainfall and upstream water flow. The Surma River at Chhatak is currently flowing 16 centimeters above the danger level, posing a significant threat to nearby communities.

## Rising Water Levels

In the past 24 hours, Sunamganj recorded substantial rainfall, with Laurergarh receiving 140 millimeters and Sunamganj town 110 millimeters. This continuous rainfall has led to a rapid increase in river water levels. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Surma River at Chhatak stands at 8.86 meters, 16 centimeters above the danger mark.

At other points, the river levels are below the danger mark: 7.35 meters at Sunamganj, 7.44 meters at Laurergarh, and 6.06 meters at Dirai. However, BWDB officials warn that if rainfall persists in upstream areas, water levels could rise further.

## Impact on Communities

The rising water levels have already begun affecting residential areas. In Charagaon, a border area under Tahirpur upazila, water from hilly streams has inundated several houses, exacerbating the suffering of residents in low-lying areas. Sunamganj BWDB Executive Engineer Emdadul Haque highlighted the high pressure of upstream water flow due to heavy rainfall.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Minhajur Rahman assured that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and has prepared officials in all upazilas to handle the crisis. Adequate food supplies have been stored to support affected communities.
