Mohammad Shahed, also known as Shahed Karim, the former chairman of Regent Hospital who was jailed over COVID-19 test certificate fraud, has been arrested again by police in Dhaka. Police said he was detained around 1:25 pm today from the ECB Chattar area in the capital on an outstanding arrest warrant in a case filed with Pallabi Police Station. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station Hasan Basir confirmed the arrest, stating it was made under a warrant against a case filed under Ortho Rin Adalat Ain 2003.

Shahed was previously accused in 35 cases, including fraud, money laundering, and acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income. His notoriety rose in 2020 after authorities found that Regent Hospital had issued fake COVID-19 test certificates. Investigators alleged he embezzled more than Tk 110 million through various fraud schemes, including over Tk 31 million from fake coronavirus test reports.

Shahed was released from prison on September 4, 2024, after securing bail in all cases. His re-arrest comes as a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against him.
