# Recent Rainwater Provides Relief to Aman Paddy Farmers in Rajshahi

After a prolonged dry spell, recent rainfall has rejuvenated Aman paddy fields in Rajshahi, offering much-needed relief to farmers. The rain, which brought 99.4 millimeters—the highest this season—has restored essential moisture to the fields, reducing the need for irrigation. Farmers are now hopeful of a good yield and significant savings on irrigation costs, which have been rising due to drought.

The rain has come at a critical time during the flowering and grain formation stages of Aman paddy, a period when adequate moisture is crucial for yield. Farmers in Paba Upazila, like Nazir Uddin and Astan Ali, have reported that the rain has not only boosted the health of their paddy plants but also reduced the risk of heat-related diseases and pests.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), 82,452 hectares of land in Rajshahi have been cultivated with Aman paddy this season, with a target production of 3,14,336 metric tons. Deputy Director Mostafa Kamal Hossain of the DAE noted that timely rain during this stage of growth is vital for better yield. He added that the use of modern varieties and technology this season has further raised expectations among farmers.

Farmers are estimating potential savings of up to one thousand taka per bigha in irrigation costs, as the rain has reduced the need for multiple rounds of irrigation. The cost of irrigation from BMDA deep tube wells is about Taka 250 per bigha, making the savings significant for these farmers.

Rainwater is also believed to reduce the need for pesticides, further lowering costs for farmers. This timely rain has not only alleviated the immediate concerns of drought but has also provided a natural boost to the Aman paddy, enhancing its growth and yield potential.

The revival of Aman paddy fields is a significant development for Rajshahi's agricultural sector. Aman paddy is a staple crop in the region, and a good yield is crucial for the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.
