# Prime Minister to Provide New Homes for Flood-Affected Families in Banshkhali

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to deliver new homes to 100 families who were rendered homeless by the recent devastating floods in the Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram. The Prime Minister will hand over the keys of these homes to the affected families during a rally in Banshkhali on August 9 as part of his visit to Cox's Bazar and Chattogram. The reconstruction of their homes is being funded by the government. In consideration of natural disasters, particularly floods, the construction of these houses incorporates RCC pillars, wood, and tin. The design of the houses is deemed 'disaster-tolerant' due to the use of tin for enclosure and roofing. Each tin house measures 18 feet in length and 12 feet in width, comprising two rooms. Additionally, there will be an attached toilet measuring five feet by five feet. The construction is nearing completion, funded by the local government department.

Mohammad Sharif Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Chattogram, said, 'The families who lost everything to the floodwaters found themselves in a dire situation, and the government's initiative to provide them with housing has instilled a renewed sense of hope. They are filled with joy that the government is reconstructing homes on their own land, and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will personally hand over the keys. They are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and receive the keys of their new homes.'

As per sources from the district administration, a total of 100 affected families have been identified, with 10 families each in Banshkhali Municipality and nine unions. Former Mayor of Banshkhali Municipality, Kamrul Islam Hossaini, said, 'Families whose homes were destroyed by the flood and who lack the means to construct new houses have been identified to receive housing from the Prime Minister.'

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, conducted an inspection of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s forthcoming visit to Banshkhali and the ongoing construction of houses for flood-affected families. He toured the site and the houses being built near Baharchhara beach in Banshkhali upazila. Preparations are in full swing at the designated venue adjacent to Baharchhara beach ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. The Deputy Commissioner reviewed the construction of the stage and pandal, security measures, seating arrangements for guests, and the overall management of the venue. He engaged with the officials responsible and relevant parties regarding the progress of the preparations. Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah told BSS that the overall arrangements for the Prime Minister's visit are advancing swiftly. 'I have inspected the venue in Baharchhara, Banshkhali, and have instructed all involved to remain vigilant in every aspect to ensure the event is organized smoothly,' he added. Concerning the provision of housing for the affected individuals, the Deputy Commissioner remarked, 'I have communicated with the engineers and construction workers regarding the structural integrity and quality of the work being done on the houses.'
