The government has appointed new deputy commissioners (DCs) in Natore, Gaibandha, and Rangpur, along with a new divisional commissioner in Rajshahi. The Public Administration Ministry issued two separate notifications on Wednesday, announcing the appointments. According to one notification, Md Yusuf Ali, member (additional secretary) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, has been appointed divisional commissioner of Rajshahi. In another notification, Deputy Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Sumoni Akter has been appointed DC of Natore, while Dr Md Moniruzzaman, private secretary to the local government, rural development and cooperatives minister, has been appointed DC of Gaibandha. Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Israt Jahan has been appointed DC of Rangpur.

## Significance of the Appointments

The appointment of new deputy commissioners is a routine yet significant administrative change. DCs play a crucial role in the local administration, overseeing various government activities and ensuring the smooth functioning of district-level operations. Their responsibilities include law and order, revenue collection, and implementation of government policies. The new appointments are expected to bring fresh perspectives and efficiency to these critical roles.

## Background and Context

The Public Administration Ministry regularly shuffles officials to ensure dynamic governance and prevent stagnation. The previous DCs of Natore, Gaibandha, and Rangpur—Asma Shahin, Mohammad Masudur Rahman Molla, and Mohammad Ruhul Amin, respectively—have been withdrawn and attached to the Public Administration Ministry for subsequent posting. This rotation helps maintain a balance of experience and new ideas within the administrative framework.

Md Yusuf Ali's appointment as the divisional commissioner of Rajshahi is particularly notable. As a member of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, his expertise in agricultural development will be valuable for a region heavily reliant on agriculture. His new role will involve overseeing multiple districts, making his experience and insights crucial for regional development.

Sumoni Akter, the new DC of Natore, brings her experience from the Posts and Telecommunications Division. Her background in telecommunications could introduce innovative approaches to local governance, especially in enhancing communication and service delivery. Similarly, Dr Md Moniruzzaman's role as private secretary to the local government minister equips him with a deep understanding of rural development and cooperatives, which will be beneficial for Gaibandha.

Israt Jahan's appointment as the DC of Rangpur is also significant. Her experience in the Ministry of Home Affairs will be instrumental in managing law and order, a critical aspect of district administration. Her role will involve coordinating with various government agencies to ensure the district's stability and development.
